Heartlands Academy named secondary and overall school of the year at the 2020 Tes awards

Heartlands Academy has been named Secondary school of the year and Overall school of the year at this year’s Tes Schools Awards. 

The Tes Awards are recognised as amongst the most prestigious schools awards in the world, celebrating the most outstanding individuals and institutions across the country.

Awards judges were impressed by the academy’s ability to overcome social, cultural and economic barriers to achieve fantastic results, which have seen the academy place in the top 0.1% of secondary schools in the country.

Heartlands Academy is truly ‘a place to empower dreams’. It emerged as the winner, for me, not only because of its outstanding performance but also because of the attention given to developing its students as active change-makers with impact in their local communities.

With a progress 8 score of 1.46 in the 2018-19 academic year, Heartlands Academy is ranked the number one sponsored academy in the country for progress and has placed sixth overall in the national league tables.

These achievements are all the more impressive given the academy’s location in Nechells, Birmingham, which is the 16th most deprived ward in the entire country. Unfortunately, more than two-thirds of children grow up in poverty in Nechells, with 69% of the academy’s students classed as disadvantaged.

To be named secondary school of the year and overall school of the year is quite simply phenomenal. We take this opportunity to congratulate all our talented academy and regional staff, students and parents for this spectacular achievement.
